The Following Years

The fourth season of Happy Holidays Giving Trees is approaching, and some modifications to the program have been made. In the second year, employees were allowed to buy any gift they wanted for the children, rather than limiting themselves to fitness items. The shelter also provided a list of items that the children needed. If people bought items that were on a certain child’s wish list, a tag was attached to the gift so it was easily identified by the shelter staff when the presents were dropped off. So many children were on the list in 1995 that a paper tree on a bulletin board near the artificial pine tree was needed to accommodate all the tags. That year, gifts for almost 70 children were provided. One of our divisions that had ownership in a motion picture company provided each child with a cassette tape soundtrack from a popular kid’s movie. (more…)

Happy Holidays Giving Tree, Part 1

Did you know that you can positively impact more than just the fitness levels of today’s youth at your health club? While many children aren’t exercising enough, some have more pressing problems than being out of shape. Many are victims of violence, drugs, poverty, lack of family, etc. Because of trends like these, movements are under way at many health and recreational clubs to involve youth in alternative activities or to provide them with assistance. Home for the Holidays Post 3

They need to know that if someone touches them in certain places, it’s bad — and that it’s not the child who does something bad, but the person touching them. They need to know that you want be told anything that frightens them or makes them uneasy, regardless of if it’s a family member or a stranger. They need to know that they can depend on you if something does happen. (more…)

Personally, I’m not sure I would be willing to allow a known pedophile any access to a child, but I am aware that for many people that’s an incredibly difficult decision to make. If you were sexually abused as a child and you have never admitted it, then you probably have trouble facing down the abuser, even as an adult. (more…)

In movies and advertisements, in greeting cards and song, home is portrayed as the place to be during the holidays. For many people this means returning to their parents’ or grandparents’ house. Songs and ads talk about warm family feelings, wonderful meals and the closeness of kin. There is a problem with this scenario, however. The problem is that these lovely movies and cards and songs don’t cover all families. (more…)
